The Science Behind Kalzyme

Kalzyme is developed by the research company ZymIQ in Lund, Sweden, in collaboration with veterinary specialists. Here, you can explore how enzymes work, what research has shown, and the science behind our technology.

What Are Enzymes?

Enzymes play a vital role in both animal and human biological systems, regulating thousands of chemical reactions such as digestion, energy production, and cell repair.

Each enzyme has a unique three-dimensional structure that allows it to recognize and act on specific substances. Kalzyme's enzymes, known as hydrolases, become active when applied to the skin or mouth.

How Does It Work?

When bacteria attach to teeth, skin, or inside the ear, they can form a protective layer called a biofilm. This structure helps microorganisms stay attached to the surface and makes buildup more difficult to remove.

Kalzyme's hydrolytic enzymes target the structures that hold biofilm together, helping break down buildup and making it easier to remove.

Why We Don't Eliminate All Bacteria

Good and Bad Bacteria

Not all bacteria are harmful. The body's natural microbiome contains both beneficial and potentially harmful microorganisms, and maintaining a healthy balance is important for overall health.

Unlike products that broadly eliminate bacteria, Kalzyme's enzyme technology targets biofilm without aiming to kill all bacteria. This helps preserve the beneficial bacterial flora that supports a healthy skin and oral microbiome.

  • Mechanical

    Scrubbing the biofilm

    • Can cause irritation to the skin or gums
    • Cannot reach every surface, gap or fold
    • Has to be repeated constantly as the film returns
  • Chemical

    A total wipe

    • Kills everything, both good and bad
    • Can sting or irritate sensitive skin
    • Leaves the microbiome unbalanced and vulnerable again

  • Enzymatic

    Cutting the bindings

    • Breaks down the biofilm at its source
    • Balances the biome
    • Gentle enough for daily use
  • Studies

Three studies on Dental Spray and dog owners' experiences.

  • Our Veterinarians

Four veterinarians with over 100 years of combined experience.
